My typical work day starts at 5:30 a.m. Breakfast is coffee on the go, and lunch is nonexistent. A busy schedule means a growling stomach for me all day. When I called Karl from Central Family Restaurant, he suggested I come in during the morning to try some dishes. I was thrilled to be able to enjoy a sit-down breakfast!
Central Family Restaurant is located at 400 N George Street in York. The establishment is a diner that serves unlimited amounts of options and variety. To me, diners are the best ways to indulge in comfort food. Between the atmosphere and the hot meals, nothing satisfies my belly more than a good home cooked meal.
I meet Karl (in the photo above serving a table) when I walk into the restaurant, and he shows me to a table. He has a list already made up of what he wants me to try. My mouth is watering, and I am ready to settle into a good meal. It is Friday morning before the Thanksgiving holiday. There are a lot of families chatting away at their tables, babies laughing behind me, and some folks enjoying a cup of coffee by themselves. The simple, local feel of the restaurant is a great feeling. Karl’s wait staff hustles around filling cups and checking on the guests.
Karl brings out his popular appetizer, Tater Babies. The dish is filled with potato wedges, oozing cheese, and bacon. There is ranch for dipping and extra napkins just in case! Not your typical “cheese fries,” as the wedges give the dish a different texture. Great comfort food! Before I get too far into the Babies, Karl brings out a delicious crab cake.
Customers have the choice to get their crab cake fried or broiled. I put a little tartar sauce on my crab and take a bite. I notice right away that there is something wonderfully different about the tartar sauce. It seems to have extra pickles. When Karl comes back to check on me I ask about the tartar sauce. He says it is handmade. I have never tasted anything like it! It tastes like there are extra pickles mixed in. I could eat this sauce on everything!
Karl must see my stomach expanding from all the delicious food I am shoving into my mouth, so he brings me a couple boxes, as well as Reuben sandwich. I have had a lot of Reubens, but sometimes they are just too messy for me. Not Karl’s! This Reuben was the best I have ever had in my whole entire life! Grilled rye with sauerkraut, alpine Swiss cheese, corn beef, and sauce. I think it was the corn beef that made my taste buds start dancing. This sandwich was the highlight of my week. It may beat out my mom’s Thanksgiving meal next week. I do not want to eat the whole sandwich because I want to enjoy it for dinner, so I pack it up with the Tater Babies and Crab Cake.
Karl must have read my mind before I walked in the door that day because everything he put in front of me was a new favorite. There is only one word to describe the chocolate cake with peanut butter icing: AMAZING. I could eat it every day. The icing alone I could eat. I wanted to sneak in the kitchen and snatch the recipe! The Apple Dumpling was spectacular as well. I love that it reminded me of a fall treat. I posted the dumpling on my Facebook, and a bunch of people started commenting how wonderful it looked.
Central Family Restaurant provides meals to the local folks of York. Karl appreciates his daily customers just as much as new faces that walk through door. Karl and his staff are personally involved with the diner. You will find Karl walking around chatting with guests, filling coffee mugs, and taking orders. The restaurant is a great place for family to enjoy time together as well as the comforts of a good meal. Make sure you grab some extra tartar sauce and that chocolate cake with peanut butter icing!
