Thanksgiving is said to be a time of gratitude and as the name suggests a time of giving thanks. During the holiday season many organizations donate their time and services to the community where they are located. Outreach Ministries, ran by Edgar, owner and operator of Wholy Chicken in the east end of York, PA, is one of these organizations.
Wholy Chicken is a family owned restaurant that has over 45 years experience in Latin American and Caribbean style foods. The restaurant was opened to support the local community and to allow the children of the community to have a safe place to be.
The doors of the restaurant are always open to anyone in the community. The family sees this as an importance to allow the community to know they are there for them in a time of need. Edgar is very involved with the children of the community, offering mentoring and guidance to them so they too may one day want to make a difference.
Edgar and his wife have hosted numerous events all throughout the city of York. During the summer months they hold 1-2 free events in the local park. They feed the community and have performers and dancers for entertainment. This event is held to bring the community together and to show them how nice York’s local parks can be.
During the holiday season three major events are held. This will be the fifth year in a row that they will be giving away free meals on Thanksgiving. Last year over 3300 meals were giving to the people of the local community and this year will be no different.
This will be the first year; however they will be giving over 500 meals to a partner organization to give out meals on the west side of the city. There has been an overwhelming amount of volunteers to help package and hand out the meals this season.
In addition to the Thanksgiving festivities, there will be a bike giveaway the weekend following Thanksgiving. This event is always a fan favorite and is the fourth year it will take place.
Finally, a little before the Christmas holiday there will be a truckload of toys that will be given away to the local children. Edgar and his family’s generous efforts have brought the locals together and a “family” as such is being created.
With all of the giving and gratitude Edgar and his family have, its hard not to appreciate, and want to give a little yourself. Carryout Courier was approached by Edgar for donations of white clam shell flip top containers. Monetary donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase the containers from a local merchant.
If you are interested in making a donation you can call or text Chad Eisenhart at 717-814-9289, or stop by Carryout Courier’s office at 1301 N George Street, York (at the corner of 10th Ave and N George St).
We look forward to making this Thanksgiving one that Wholy Chicken and the community will remember.
