Stone Grille and Taphouse is located in York, PA. Perhaps you are more familiar with the restaurant’s former name: Tailgaters. This sports bar and eatery will have your taste buds in a tizzy when you take a look at the outrageous menu. Stone Grille also provides beers on tap and other great drinks for diners to enjoy.
I meet the wonderful staff for a late lunch. David, the manager, meets me right when I walk through the door. The staff has already preselected menu items for me to try. Danette, the owner, sits with me in a booth and chats about her restaurant.
The inside of the Taphouse is gorgeous. The restaurant is somewhere you want to be with your friends during happy hour. When you first walk through the door you will see to your left a BrewTaGo section. The restaurant has beers available for carryout. This idea has been becoming popular as more people enjoy mixing and matching their beverages. The dining area is just as impressive. The name Stone Grille fits perfectly, as the atmosphere reflects a stone-like, majestic feel. David sits me at a booth where I can see the whole restaurant. There are some folks sitting at the bar discussing which beer they should try.
A popular appetizer at Stone Grille is the Chesapeake Crab Dip. Crab dip is a great option when you are guzzling beers. The taphouse makes a delicious soft pretzel bowl and then fills it with the Crab Dip. Topped off with cheddar jack cheese, the crab dip is creamy and mouth-watering. The appetizer is served with bits of pretzel bread. The house made soft pretzel is a new taste for me. Usually restaurants serve crab dips with crackers or bread. The Taphouse soft pretzel bread is a tasty surprise.
Brews bring on different cravings. The Taphouse also has Woodstove Oven Steamed Clams and Mussels. This appetizer is a pound of clams (or mussels) steamed in garlic, bacon, lemon butter, Hoegaardem White Ale, and served with garlic toast. But the dishes don’t stop there. There is also Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Philly Cheesesteak Poutine, and Onion Rings just to name a few. Gotta try them all!
My next order of business was too powerful for my stomach. My waitress, Samantha (who is absolutely wonderful!), brings me out this GIGANTIC Prime Rib. Along with the monstrous dish, I also am given a twice baked potato and grilled asparagus. Before I get a word out, Samantha says she is happy to provide boxes. This meal is for a giant! I snap a quick picture and send it to Jason. He assures me he will gobble it up if I can’t finish it. The only time I eat steak is when I order a cheesesteak. So this Prime Rib is a whole new ballgame for me. If you are not feeling as adventurous, there is an option to order a Queen Cut which is 12 oz steak.
The steak is fantastic to say the least. For as mighty as the dish looks, the flavor is even better. The steak is roasted with herbs and spices. The potato and asparagus is delicious as well. I happily pack up the meal. Jason later reported that he has never eaten a steak so large. He ate it all!
I keep browsing the menu to see what other entrees I want to try in the future. Seafood Pot Pie looks delicious. The dish includes Shrimp, Scallops, Crab, Clams, Crimini Mushrooms, and Sweet Peas in a Seafood Cream sauce. Another dish I was eyeing up was the Baked Lobster Mac N Cheese. Chunks of Maine Lobster and Penne Pasta folded with Bacon and Cheddar Jack Alfredo Sauce. The dish is topped with soft pretzel bread crumbs.
My experience at Stone Grille and Taphouse was fantastic. There are many items I will have to try. Danette, David, and Samantha catered to all the customers who walked through the door and provided exceptional service. And my experience didn’t stop at the Prime Rib. The last item Samantha brings me is a Peanut Butter Cheesecake with an Oreo crust. And of course the dish is HUGE. I couldn’t just box it up and save it for later, I had to try a nibble. It was so creamy and delicious. It could not have been more perfect. If you are not a peanut butter fan, the Taphouse has an array of desserts. I think next time I am going to try the Chocolate Stout Brownie or maybe the Baked Apple Crisp.
Tell your friends you know where to go for some delicious food and some beers. You will not be disappointed! Or if you are having an evening staying in, watching a game, order some carryout to enjoy!
